Wildlife warden sentenced to one month in jail

The honorary wildlife warden of Uttara Kannada district has been sentenced to one month in prison after a local court upheld the defamation charges filed against him.

The Civil Judge and Judicial Magistrate First Class at Dandeli sentenced Narasimha Bhat Chapakanda to one month in jail and slapped a fine of Rs. 10,000 for accusing Mahendra Kumar, director of Green India Trust, of links with Maoists. The complaint by Mr. Kumar says the warden had “falsely written” in newspapers that the Trust had contact with the banned group while using nude pictures of Kunabi tribals to raise funds.

This adds to the long list of wildlife wardens in the dock over allegations of impropriety.
