Waste is a major contributor to air pollution, says expert

March 11, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:31 am IST - Bengaluru:

In the city, waste is a major contributor to air pollution, said ecologist T.V. Ramachandra. “Solid waste produces large amounts of methane due to anaerobic bacteria. Methane is far more dangerous than carbon dioxide in terms of global warming. Even pollution of lakes leads to greater methane generation,” he said.

Mr. Ramachandra’s study on urbanisation and greenhouse gas emission in the city paints a worrying picture.

He believes the lack of action in Bengaluru is making the city unlivable.
