The contract pourakarmikas of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) have threatened to strike work if the civic authority does not release their pending wages soon.

According to S. Balan, president of the BBMP Guttige Pourakarmikara Sangha, the contract pourakarmikas have not been paid their wages for November and December. The pourakarmikas from Cox Town, Banaswadi and surrounding areas have not been paid their wages even for October.

Mr. Balan said that a majority of the pourakarmikas, who are Christians, were not able to celebrate Christmas.

“Why is the BBMP being insensitive to the plight of the workers? The BBMP officials and even the Commissioner expect their salary in the first week of every month. How are the pourakarmikas any different?” He said the BBMP had gone back on the assurances made during the conciliatory meeting held in November.

“We will meet with the Labour Commissioner again on Saturday.

Depending on the outcome of the meeting, we will decide the next course of action,” Mr. Balan added.
