Thieves return stolen idol

The idol of deity Yellamma, which was stolen from the temple on Magadi Road a week ago, was found outside the temple on Saturday morning.

The Magadi Road police suspect that the thieves may have dumped it fearing that they would be caught.

On Saturday morning, the temple priest found the 100-year-old idol outside, with the artificial jewels intact, outside.

The accused had gained access by climbing a peepal tree located next to the temple and escaped with the idol and jewels on November 14. After the theft, the police launched a massive manhunt and were keeping a close watch on possible artefact buyers, besides activating their informers’ network.

The police said that the thieves may have found it difficult to dispose the idol and may have decided to return it to avoid being caught. The police are trying to track down the accused.
