These ‘eco’ schools lead the way

Last week, the High Court of Karnataka proposed a novel idea to the garbage crisis — educating children on waste segregation so that the young ones can influence their parents and ensure effective waste disposal in their homes.

Several schools have already set up a waste management model in their premises and have trained students on segregation. Priti Soota, a biology teacher of Delhi Public School (East), is leading one such project.

She said that they have also tied up with the Centre for Environment Education and enrolled for the International Eco Schools programme.

She said that the school sends around 300 kg of dry waste for recycling and composts wet waste on the premises. They also plan to have a paper recycling unit, conduct audits and review their action plan from time to time.

Another institution that has adopted garbage segregation training is Blossoms School in Bagalakunte.

Children are made aware of the different types of waste and how to dispose them through their science clubs.
