Five paramedical students from the city, who allegedly threatened to kidnap a Channapatna doctor’s daughter, were arrested on Friday. Police said they needed Rs. 10 lakh to set up a diagnostic centre.

Sachin, Kumar, Raju, Krishna and Yogananda, students of Rajarajeshwari Medical College here, come from deprived backgrounds. They hatched a plan to kidnap the 11-year-old daughter of Dr. Sanjeev Kumar, Sachin’s neighbour.

Two days ago, they plotted to kidnap the child but could not. They then started calling Dr. Kumar threatening him that his daughter would be kidnapped if he did not give Rs. 10 lakh.

Dr. Kumar called the police who negotiated with the gang, bringing down the ransom to Rs. 1 lakh. The five were nabbed when they went to receive the money.
