How useful would an app be if it tells you what to do in case of an emergency while travelling on a train? Or an electricity meter which warns you about over-consumption?
A few students imagined and executed such innovative ideas, some of which were handpicked to feature in the finals of the Cloud 20/20 Version 6.0, the latest edition of the online technical project contest by Unisys India.
Here are some of the picks of the contest, which was held here on Friday.

Using 3D Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for urban planning, infrastructure management, disaster management and environment monitoring, the project by the IMS Engineering College team from Ghaziabad took home the first prize.
From simple uses like telling you where windows can be placed while constructing a building to forewarning which buildings will be most affected in case of a bomb blast, the system ‘Geo-RDBMS’ can also support a large volume of 3D geo-data.

Railway Incident Recovery System
A team from V.R. Siddhartha Engineering College, Vijayawada, has developed the app Message Sharing System (MSS) that empower train passengers.
Those with reserved tickets can register using their mobile number and gain access to first-aid tips, location tracking and even numbers of doctors on the train. Accessible on phone or laptops, the SMS alerts can be sent to nearby railway stations in case of fire mishaps or to police personnel if there is a theft. A ‘coach view’ also enables passengers to locate emergency exits. The project came third in the contest.
Automated Billing
Presenting a win-win situation for both consumers as well as energy companies, the internet-empowered smart meter project from a team from Mangalore Institute of Technology and Engineering, Mangaluru, enables real-time energy consumption monitoring. Connected to a server, the consumer will know when his consumption goes up, while the company will be able to disconnect power to those with unpaid bills.
