The State government has decided to stop its ambitious programme of giving an incentive of ₹2 for every day a girl attends school. The aim of the scheme was to improve attendance of girls in school.

The scheme was started on January 1, 2014 based on Chief Minister Siddaramiah’s budget promise and aimed to reach close to 3 lakh girl students in class one every year.

Replying to a question by BJP member Tara Anuradha on stopping the fund allocation to the scheme, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Tanveer Sait told the Legislative Council on Friday that the benefits would be extended to girl students in a different form.

He said that the scheme did not have a significant impact on the enrolment of girl students. The Gross Enrollment Ratio was 99.42 % for girls and 99.89% for boys. Other incentives, such as supplying workbooks for students from classes four to nine, would encourage students, he argued.

Sources pointed out that with the number of working days being 200 each year, a student would get ₹400 annually. “We need to think of a better incentive for students,” an official said.

There is a case lodged with the Lokayukta alleging misuse of funds meant for this scheme.
