The State government has decided to impose fine on households failing to segregate garbage in the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) limits. An amendment to the Karnataka Municipal Corporations Act 1976 to this effect was cleared by the Cabinet on Tuesday at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar.
According to senior officials in the BBMP, as per the amendment, the BBMP can penalise citizens for littering, spitting, urinating and defecating, besides failing to segregate garbage. The penalty for the first offence for households is Rs. 100, while for bulk generators, it is Rs. 500. The penalty for the second and subsequent offence is Rs. 500 for domestic, while it is Rs. 1,000 for the bulk generators. There was no provision in the present Act to impose file on households who declined to segregate waste, officials said.
The BBMP official said that the amendment Bill will now be sent to Governor H.R. Bhardwaj by the government. The Governor may either pass the ordinance or direct the government to get clearance for the Bill from both the Legislative Assembly and Council. The ordinance too will have to be ratified by both the Houses.
