Assuring Bangalore residents of resolving the garbage crisis before Deepavali, Deputy Chief Minister R. Ashok on Friday said steps would be taken to find a permanent solution to the problem by setting up wider buffer zones around the dumping yards.
Addressing a special meeting of the Bangalore city unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party here, Mr. Ashok said the width of such buffer zones around landfills had reduced from 1,000 metres to 50 metres.
He would work on reinstating the former distance of one kilometre. The new tenders for garbage disposal would have the provision and he had already discussed the issue with Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar. Councillors and city legislators would also be consulted.

Addressing BJP workers, he conceded the garbage crisis had dented the party’s image but would be resolved before Deepavali. He went on to say the BJP-ruled BBMP had done much more for the city than previous councils.
Terming the commissioning of the Cauvery IV Stage Phase II drinking water project as a major achievement for his government, he called upon the party councillors and legislators in the city to hold programmes in their jurisdiction to mark the occasion.
