‘SMSs came from outside State’

August 18, 2012 08:30 am | Updated November 16, 2021 11:14 pm IST - BANGALORE:

The SMSs carrying inflammable contents that triggered panic among people from the northeast, resulting in their exodus from Bangalore, purportedly came from outside the State, a senior police official involved in investigation has said.

“This is not locally generated and has origins elsewhere, which came with a political agenda,” the official told The Hindu . According to him, these SMSs, which carried threats to the northeast communities, were interpolated in Karnataka with local content.

The official said the MMSs and SMSs were in circulation for the last 10 days, and that the police started getting information since August 12. “We also had inputs from our own sources that there could be attacks after August 20.”

The origin of cyber messages, he said, was extremely difficult to trace as they were in bulk and came through multiple service providers.
