A man who rented a room in a lodge located above a jewellery store in Cottonpet, made away with gold and silver articles after gaining entry into the store by drilling a hole from his room. The incident came to light on Sunday morning, when Himmat Prakash, the owner of Kanchan Jewellers located on Cottonpet Main Road, opened the store and found the place ransacked.

The other occupants of the lodge claimed that they had been disturbed by continuous drilling noise from the room for the past 10 days and had even complained to the owner, but no action was taken, according to the police.

According to the Cottonpet police, a man rented a room in the lodge 20 days ago. The room was located directly above the jewellery store. The accused has drilled a 1.5-ft-wide hole through the concrete floor of 1.5 ft thickness, entered the store, broke open the locker and stole gold and silver articles, the police said.

Investigations revealed that the accused produced a fake voter ID card to rent the room. Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) M.N. Anucheth, who is supervising the investigations, said the accused had used a machine to drill the hole. “The other occupants in the lodge had complained to the management about the noise, but it was not looked into,” he added.
