Pulled up by UGC, Christ University changes name

Will now be called Christ (deemed to be university)

Christ University will now be called Christ (deemed to be university).

The move comes after the University Grants Commission (UGC) pulled up deemed to be universities for attaching the suffix university although they still did not have university status. The UGC has given three universities in Karnataka a deadline till 4 p.m. on Thursday to change the name.

Jain University authorities, however, are still working out a new name and will finalize the same later this afternoon, sources informed

The UGC had pulled up 123 deemed to be universities and had said that they cannot use the word “university” as per section 23 of the UGC Act. It had also warned that these institutions would lose their “deemed to be university” tag if they failed to make the switch.

Our Mangaluru Staff Reporer reports:

Yenepoya University authorities said they have proposed to the UGC  to retain the name "Yenepoya" (deemed to be university). The communication in this regard from Yenepoya University Registrar G.Sreekumar Menon has reached the UGC on November 27.
