An argument between a tenant and landlord quickly escalated into a violent attack on the pregnant wife of the tenant on Sunday when the landlord, along with a few others, barged into the house and assaulted the woman. The incident took place in Hosakerehalli in Girinagar.

According to the complaint filed with the police, K.G. Mahesh, the owner of the house in Kalidasnagar, barged into the house with some men and women when Lakshmi (26), wife of Ravish, the tenant, was alone. They threw household items around and some of the women also snatched her gold bangles away and assaulted her.

Ravish and Lakshmi hail from Tumakuru and had rented the house in August last year from Basavegowda (65) by paying ₹10 lakh deposit. However, Basavegowda then transferred the ownership of the house to his son Mahesh. In October last year, Mahesh approached the couple and asked them to vacate the house which they agreed to if the deposit was refunded.

However, the couple claimed that Mahesh refused to return the deposit as he said that he had not taken it from them. Basavegowda started avoiding the couple's calls forcing them to approach the court and getting an injunction order on the issue. According to police, Mahesh was accompanied by his relative Kenchegowda and two women. They have been arrested by the Girinagar police on charges of assault, damage to property and dacoity. Further investigations are underway, the police said.
