Power situation may improve next week

Updated - March 28, 2016 03:14 pm IST - Bengaluru:

With no sight of rainfall and people feeling the heat, three hour daily power cut are expected to cause further inconvenience consumers. However, scheduled power cuts could help them plan their activities.

The power cuts announced by Bescom on Thursday are the result of technical problems coupled with annual maintenance works being carried out by major Central and State generators.

While the State faces a shortage of around 1,830 MW, Bescom is facing a 900 MW deficit. Officials expect the situation to improve slightly next week when a non-functioning unit of Udupi Power Corporation Ltd resumes operations. “We were tired of unscheduled power cuts in the past few days. At least the schedule will help us plan our day,” said Rishi Basu, a communications professional.

On Thursday, there were protests in Yelahanka over unscheduled power cuts.

Industrial feeders and feeders connected to water supply and other essential services will be spared power cuts, officials said.

For other urban areas under Bescom, power cuts will be for four hours.

In rural areas, the total amount of scheduled power cuts will increase. Nirantara Jyothi feeders will have four hours of load shedding while agricultural feeders will have five hours of 3-phase power supply.
