Power cable snaps, train services hit

Snapping of an overhead electrification cable at the Krishnarajapuram (K.R. Puram) Railway Station in the city on Sunday led to a delay in the departure of at least two long-distance trains and the arrival of at least one long-distance train, and partial cancellation of services of four passenger trains.

According to sources, the 25,000 W cable that supplies power to engines, snapped and fell on Duronto Express, which was coming to the city from Howrah, near the locomotive shed at 3.45 p.m.

The departure of Brindavan Express and the Bangalore–Chennai air-conditioned Double Decker Express and the arrival of Duronto Express to the city were delayed by two hours, according to Railway officials.

However, passengers at the K.R. Puram station said they had to wait for several hours.

Services of the following passenger trains were cancelled after the incident: Marikuppam–Bangalore City Passenger (56509) and Arakkonam–Bangalore City Passenger (56261) between Whitefield and Bangalore City, and Bangalore City–Jolarpet Express (16520) and Bangalore City–Bangarpet Express (16522) between Bangalore City and Whitefield.

Anil Agarwal, Divisional Railway Manager, Bangalore, termed the incident a “major breakdown”.
