Police personnel attacked on duty in separate incidents

A woman police constable was attacked and abused by a woman who was attempting to immolate herself over a property dispute, at Chikka Mavalli in Kalasipalya on Sunday.

Constable Ramya, 24, and her colleague Bhagyamma was on security duty at Lalbagh for the flower show when they received an alert that a woman was trying to douse herself in petrol with the intention of setting herself on fire. The control staff asked the constables to attend to the matter as they were closest to the spot.

The two rushed to the spot and found that the woman, later identified as Nirupama, was holding a can of petrol in one hand and a matchbox in the other. “She was crying and abusing her family for not giving her her share of the property, that she said she was entitled to,” the police said.

Ms. Ramya tried to calm the woman down and cautiously approached her with the intention of relieving her of the can and matchbox. However, Nirupama physically attacked and began abusing her. With the help of her colleague, Ms. Ramya managed to overpower Nirupama and took her to the station in their pink hoysala.

Based on the constable’s complaint, the police booked Nirupama under Section 309 (attempt to commit suicide), Section 504 (provoke breach of the peace), Section 506 (criminal intimidation) and Section 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his/her duty) of the Indian Penal Code.

“Initial inquiries revealed that Nirupama was upset with her father who had allegedly sold the family’s ancestral house but did not give her a share. She has been produced before the court and remanded to judicial custody,” said a police officer.

In another incident, a head constable was allegedly assaulted and abused by a scooterist in a road rage incident at Krishna Flourmill traffic junction on Monday morning. Manjunath T., 45, was on duty when he noticed a man riding rashly.

When he stopped him, the rider grabbed him by his collar and began abusing him. Constable Siddaraju, on duty in the vicinity, noticed the commotion and rushed to his colleague’s aid. But the rider pushed Mr. Siddaraju down and threatened him before speeding away. The duo who noted the registration number of the scooter and filed a complaint with the Sheshadripuram police.
