Referring again to the tabloid report, Mr. Mazurier’s lawyer argued that the case is riddled with ambiguities.

Lawyers representing French Consulate official Pascal Mazurier sought to bolster his bail plea here on Monday by presenting before the court a report that appeared in a regional tabloid the previous day.

Pointing to sections of the news report, which quoted an unnamed “senior police officer”, counsel argued that the results of the DNA test do not conclusively indict Mr. Mazurier who has been accused by his wife of raping their three-and-a-half-year-old daughter.

Public Prosecutor C.A. Ravindra, however, opposed the move to admit the tabloid’s contents in the proceedings.

He argued that if newspaper reports can become evidence that is admissible in court, then the role of investigating agencies become redundant.

Mr. Ravindra sought time to formally present his objections to the petition filed by Mr. Mazurier’s counsel.

The court conceded his request and adjourned the matter to July 11.
