Over 700 autos seized

November 27, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:33 am IST - Bengaluru:

Cracking down on rogue autorickshaw drivers, in a special surprise drive, the Bengaluru Traffic police seized over 700 vehicles for demanding excess fare, refusing to go on hire and other offenses on Thursday morning.

The traffic police started the drive at 6 a.m. and ended it at 8 a.m. The police have also seized over 100 autorickshaws plying road without the licence display card. Based on commuter complaints, the drive was taken up across the city.

But autorickshaw unions point to the hypocrisy of these drives. “There is no action against cab aggregators, who operate in violation of the law. Not only do they charge more when demand goes up, they also ply for lesser rates when the demand is down. This is against the law to check unfair competition,” said Meenakshi Sundaram, member, Centre of Indian Trade Unions.
