The search for the next Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Bangalore University has gained momentum with the Syndicate declaring its nominee for the search committee which will propose the names for the post.

The Syndicate, which met on Tuesday, unanimously selected Institute of Social and Economic Change (ISEC) director R.S. Deshpande as its nominee.

The committee will consist of a nominee each of the University Grants Commission (UGC), the Chancellor, the Syndicate and the State government and recommend a list of probables to the government. These developments come a little after the former Vice-Chancellor N. Prabhu Dev quit before the end of his tenure to be Karnataka Health Systems Commission chairperson. He famously had a tumultuous relationship with the Syndicate.

Other appointments

The Syndicate also approved other key appointments. R. Ramanna, the incumbent Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS) financial accountant, will be Bangalore University’s new Finance Officer (FO), replacing in-charge FO and now in-charge VC N. Rangaswamy.

Retired district judge C.K. Balakrishna will be the legal adviser along with a team of 12 advocates, bringing an end to the controversy surrounding the former legal adviser G.R. Gurumath who was accused of “non-performance”.

President for convocation

After the debacle of a delayed annual convocation last academic year for not finding the “right chief guest”, Bangalore University has decided to invite President Pranab Mukherjee as chief guest for the next convocation, to be held in January-February 2013.

Special meeting

A special Syndicate meeting will be held on November 6 to discuss the alleged double exam at the University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE).

On Tuesday’s meeting, it was resolved to urge the State government to initiate a probe by an external agency such as the Criminal Investigation Department.

Probe sought

In the meeting, the members are said to have pulled up Registrar (Evaluation) R.K. Somashekhar for the list of custodians for answer scripts prepared by the examination section.

Members pointed out that those blacklisted earlier for exam-related malpractices were on it. It was later resolved to revise the list.
