Neck deep in debt, doctor poisons teen son, himself

August 24, 2011 11:13 am | Updated 11:13 am IST - BANGALORE:

A senior doctor and his son were found dead in their room at the Eagleton Resort on Mysore Road early on Tuesday. Dr. Manoj (43), director of the Unity Lifeline Hospital at Nagarabavi, is suspected to have poisoned his 15-year-old son Harshith before consuming poison himself.

Dr. Manoj, who also runs a nursing college in the city, had huge debts, said the Bidadi police. They suspect that his financial troubles made him take the extreme step.

Dr. Manoj and Harshith had checked into Room 209 of the resort at 11 a.m. on Monday. Dr. Manoj's wife, Jayasheela, had been desperately trying to contact the two over phone ever since they checked in. After several desperate attempts, she contacted the resort's management on Tuesday morning and sought their help. When the staff did not get any response from the duo after repeated knocks, they entered the room using a spare key to discover the decomposing bodies of the father and son on the floor, surrounded by pesticide bottles.

A suicide note by Dr. Manoj said he was responsible for the deaths but did not explain the reason, police said.

Dr. Manoj's older brother, Sunil Babu, who runs Gayathri Hospital in Vijayanagar, told the police his sibling had huge debts. The bodies have been sent for an inquest.
