Mother hangs daughter, herself

A mother hanged her five-year-old daughter before hanging herself from the ceiling of her house in Akshay Nagar in Hulimavu on Monday.

The police identified the dead as Usha (28) and Sonika.

Usha was wife of Srinathan, who works for a travel agency. Sonika was a UKG student at a local school.

The police are yet to ascertain why Usha took the extreme step.

Based on the complaint filed with Hulimavu police, Srinathan was detained for questioning.

Woman robbed

A woman identified as Jayamma was robbed of her gold chain in Rajajinagar here on Monday.

According to the police, Jayamma runs a provision store. A man, who was wearing a helmet, came to her store and asked her to pack a kilogram of sugar.

When Jayamma was busy packing sugar for him, the man posing as a customer snatched the gold chain worth Rs. 90,000 and fled from the scene with another man, who was waiting on a motorcycle a few yards away.

Jayamma raised an alarm, but the two had disappeared before help could arrive.

The Magadi Road police registered a case.

Dies of burns

A labourer identified as Babu (55) died of burns in Kathanagar slum in Jalahalli on Monday. According to the police, Babu had kept a mosquito coil near his bed before going to sleep. The police suspect that the mosquito coil must have started the fire. When Babu realised his bed had caught fire, the police said he raised an alarm and tried to get out of the house. His neighbours rushed to help him when they realised fire had engulfed his house, but Babu was not able to open the door and escape. The house was gutted and later when neighbours rushed Babu to hospital, he was declared brought dead. The Jalahalli police registered a case.

Fatal fall

In another incident, a plumber from Tamil Nadu died of head injuries he sustained after he tripped off the stairs of a building at Binnipet on Monday. The police identified the victim as Lakshman (45).

According to the police, Lakshman was living with his wife and children at Binnipet. After one of his sons committed suicide a few months ago, Lakshman had become an alcoholic. On Monday also he returned home in an inebriated state and took the staircase to reach his home on the third floor. When he was about to reach the third floor, he tripped off the stairs and fell sustaining serious head injuries and died. The police registered a case.
