Monsoon brings rain and misery

This monsoon has brought misery to a number of residents across the city with inundation of homes, especially those near the water bodies.

Take for instance the situation of the residents of Hoysalanagar in Horamavu in K.R. Puram where water from the Horamavu lake entered more than 50 houses on Sunday. Angry residents staged a protest seeking remedial measures by the civic authorities immediately.

This is the third incident in the city after Gangaiah Chetty Lake in K.R. Puram breached on Saturday inundating homes in Nethravathi layout and Nelamangala Lake breached on Saturday night flooding homes nearby.

Horamavu residents claimed that flooding is common in the area every time it rains. They alleged that though they had complained about the problem to the local MLA and Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), nothing was done to address their problems.

“We have been demanding them to strengthen the bund to no avail. We will be left with no option but to intensify our protest if the officials fail to heed to our demands,” they threatened.

The BBMP official attributed the flooding to blockade in the waste weir. The weir has been blocked due to the indiscriminate dumping of debris.

The official said that the lake is being maintained by the Bangalore Development Authority.

“If it rains again and if the water-level increases by another foot, it will surely overflow. This has been brought to the notice of the BDA authorities,” a senior official said.

BDA officials were not available for comment though several attempts were made to reach them.
