The death of 47-year-old supervisor Govind Raj’s at the metro construction site in Peenya junction on Sunday comes even as the Karnataka High Court had earlier this month repeatedly expressed concern over the welfare and safety of metro workers.
The High Court had warned BMRCL that it would order stoppage of works on the project if the authorities failed to ensure the welfare of labourers.
“None of you are interested in safeguarding the interest of labourers. Principal employer [BMRCL] is interested only in execution of work and not labourers’ interest… If you are not serious about [welfare of labourers] we will stop the work,” a Division Bench comprising Chief Justice D.H. Waghela and Justice A.S. Bopanna had observed orally last Wednesday.

Meanwhile, in a statement following the mishap at Peenya junction on Sunday, BMRCL said the corporation would ensure all benefits reached the family at the earliest.
