Mayoral polls from Oct. 1

September 23, 2019 11:11 pm | Updated 11:11 pm IST - Bengaluru

Election to the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor has been pushed to October 1. The polls were to be held on September 27.

According to a communiqué from the Regional Commissioner, the election to 12 standing committees will also be held along with that of Mayor and Deputy Mayor. The election is scheduled at 11.30 a.m.

The Urban Development Department had also written to the Regional Commissioner to hold the election to standing committees as well. This was also the demand of the Opposition BJP. The term of the incumbent standing committee members will end on December 4, 2019, as they were elected nearly two months after Mayor Gangambike Mallikarjun and her deputy Ramila Umashankar were elected. After the untimely death of Ramila Umashankar, B. Bhadre Gowda was elected as Deputy Mayor.

Meanwhile, it appears unlikely that the Congress-Janata Dal (Secular) combine in the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike will be able to retain power for the fifth year. Several councillors of the Opposition BJP are vying for the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor that have been reserved for the General category this year. Senior councillors of the ruling combine have resigned to the fact that the next Mayor and deputy could be from the BJP.
