Manipuri youth assaulted

In yet another case of an attack on a member of the northeast community, a 22-year-old Manipuri youth was allegedly assaulted by a trio on Saturday night in Austin Town. A case was registered at Ashok Nagar police station on Sunday afternoon only after the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) intervened.

The victim, Phingmi, has been living in the city for eight years. He works with a leading tech firm.

In his complaint, Phingmi stated that he was walking in Austin Town along with two friends when three unidentified men assaulted him without any provocation.

He alleged that one of them punched him in the eye. The trio fled when he screamed for help.

A senior officer with Ashok Nagar police said that Phingmi turned up post midnight in an inebriated state.

Two constables rushed to the spot with the victim in an attempt to apprehend the miscreants, but in vain.

The inspector claimed that the victim said that he would lodge a complaint the next day and the police dropped him home. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Sandeep Patil said that they were probing the allegation and had already identified some suspects.

Phingmi could not be reached for his comments.
