The doors opened to the shaft, before the lift came down

A gas cylinder distributor was crushed to death in an elevator shaft at an apartment complex in Devara Jeevana (DJ) Halli on Tuesday.

The deceased, Timmaraju T. had come to Ashiana apartment, near Amebdkar Medical College, around 12.30 p.m. with a cylinder to be delivered to the third floor.

Timmaraju was waiting on the ground floor for the elevator to descend, when the doors opened. However, the doors opened to the shaft and the lift was yet to come down. He mistakenly entered the shaft and within seconds, the elevator came down on him and crushed him to death, D.J. Halli police said.

Thimmaraju, a native of Pavgada in Tumkur district, was hired on contract by the Shravan gas agency in R.T. Nagar where he had been working for the past two years. He is survived by wife and two sons. The post-mortem was conducted at Ambedkar hospital here.

Police are investigating why the doors opened to the shaft instead of the lift. Officials said the accident was probably caused by a technical glitch in the elevator, manufactured by Lenzi Elevators India Pvt. Ltd. If this is confirmed, a case will be registered against the lift manufacturers.
