October 24, 2014 01:17 pm | Updated May 23, 2016 05:01 pm IST - Bangalore:

Residents of areas coming under Rajajinagar and Mahalakshmipuram assembly constituencies woke up to dry taps on Friday, the third day of Deepavali, as water supply to these areas was cut-off following a major pipe burst near Beggars’ Colony Ground Level Reservoir (GLR) pump house on Magadi Road.

Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) officials said the 36-inch cast iron pipeline carrying Cauvery water from Beggar’s colony GLR to West Bangalore cracked and burst after midnight on Friday. The pipeline had been laid more than 60 years ago and had become rusty and worn out, an official said.

Although repair work started as soon as the burst was noticed, residents had a harrowing time as they had to go without water supply on a festival day. All those areas were supply was scheduled after 12 pm have been hit, said former BWSSB Minister S. Suresh Kumar.

The BWSSB official said repair work had been taken up on a war-footing and the pipeline would be replaced up to a stretch of six metres. Work is likely to be completed by evening, he said requesting the public to cooperate.

Areas that have been affected include Rajajinagar 1 to 6 block, Magadi Road, Nandini layout, Mahalakshmipuram and JC Nagar.
