Link workers plan indefinite strike

Published - December 27, 2014 12:52 am IST - BENGALURU:

Demanding pending payment, link workers of BBMP’s health centres have threatened to launch an indefinite dharna in front of the civic head office from December 29.

N. Shivanna, honorary president, BBMP Health Link Workers Sangha, said that over 500 persons working in 84 health centres play a vital role in implementing health programmes. “Although they work as full time health workers, they are being given Rs. 3,000 a month after deductions, and that too irregularly. They have to get wages from August, and additional wages of Rs. 1,000 a month from January 2014. The BBMP has fixed a total salary of Rs 5,536 per worker, including the provident fund contribution and ESI. We demand that the entire amount be given to them directly,” he said.

Sangha president Shashikala B.K. said that they have been working with people from the lower strata. “Timely health care is given to pregnant, new mothers and infants. Our work is equivalent to that of nurses. We take part in field work in health campaigns,” she said.
