Barring a few unsavoury exchanges, campaigners favouring the law against superstitions were received with enthusiasm by lawyers at the City Civil Court on Friday. More than 300 lawyers participated in the signature campaign launched by the Karnataka Janashakti, a people’s organisation.
When the campaigners reached the court complex on Friday morning, a few lawyers tried to stop them and tore their pamphlets. However, many other lawyers signed the petition and joined the campaigners in distributing the pamphlets at the Government Arts and Science College.
H.V. Vasu, who led the initiative, said the focus of Karnataka Janashakti was to counter the misinformation campaign against the bill. “Recently, a popular columnist wrote that the bill seeks to ban people from drawing rangolis and planting Tulasi in their homes.” He said the bill aimed at protecting vulnerable people from the machinations of black magicians and fake godmen.
