Additional water from the much-awaited Cauvery IV Stage Phase II may have finally reached Bangalore. But it will actually take up to 45 days more for the water to flow through the taps of the 13,667 new consumers who have got the new connections.
However, supply in the core areas — where people are facing acute water shortage — will improve with immediate effect. Some areas in Yelahanka, Sahakarnagar and Bommanahalli will also benefit as supply to these areas has been erratic so far, BWSSB engineer-in-chief T. Venkataraju, told The Hindu.
The BWSSB will start drawing 100 mld initially and later augment it with additional 150 mld. This is because most of the supply lines in the new areas were laid between 2005 and 2010 when Greater Bangalore Water and Sanitation Project was planned.

“As these pipelines have been lying unused for several years, they first have to be cleaned and water has to be flushed out before they can start supply. We may need 15 to 45 days for these lines to be ready for supply.
While some areas closer to the ground level reservoirs can get water in the next few days, those at the end will get within 45 days,” Mr. Venkataraju said.
Initially water would be supplied on an experimental basis to all houses for a day or two. “This is to convince people they can get water if they take new connections. Of the targeted 2.2 lakh new consumers, only 13,667 have taken connections. We are sure more people will take connections once water starts flowing through their taps,” he added.
