Indiscriminate dumping of waste in Whitefield

July 16, 2015 12:49 pm | Updated 12:49 pm IST - Bengaluru:

As there is no formal door-to-door garbage collection like in the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) limits, a network of private collectors run the show in Whitefield.

These private collectors either sell this garbage to BBMP garbage contractors of the Mahadevapura zone, who profit by the increased garbage at landfills or dump them indiscriminately in illegal dumping yards that have sprung up in the area.

Sources said that there are nearly 12 such dumping yards operating in Khajisonenahalli, Guruvigere, Kattamanallur and other villages. Most of these yards are running in land parcels owned by a local politician.

The village residents and the people living in gated communities were up in arms in April as the garbage being dumped in these yards was being burnt, causing air pollution. The village residents had taken up the issue with the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) after which the burning of garbage has reportedly stopped. However, garbage continues to be dumped at these sites for want of a better alternative, a resident said.

Venu Reddy, resident and member of the Bruhat Whitefield Residential Communities Association (BWRCA), said the only scientific disposal of waste happening in the area presently was the bio-waste processor installed in some of the gated communities and apartments like his. “But this takes care of only a small percentage of waste being generated in the area,” he added.
