The new batch of students at the Indian Institute of Management-Bangalore (IIMB) will have the same degree certificate as the previous batches, but with an edge. The much delayed academic collaboration between the Indian Institute of Science (IISc.) and IIMB may finally start in the coming academic year.
Speaking to The Hindu earlier in the week, Devanath Tirupati, Dean of Academics, IIMB, said the collaboration, which is a result of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the two institutes way back in September 2010, would see the light of day from the academic year 2013-14. The admission process for the fresh batch of students is on at IIMB.
Prof. Tirupati said the partnership would allow students in both the institutions to study additional subjects in the other. But specific details are yet to be worked out. “The academic calendars of the two institutes are not synced. So the exchange could be possible only in the second half of the year, maybe in August-December,” he said.

Doctoral students would benefit from the programme, for which the students will not be charged extra.
“There will not be any change in their transcript (degree), but it will give them an opportunity to study a diverse set of courses,” he explained.
Speaking about the benefits of IIMB students studying at IISc., Arindham Ghosh, assistant professor, IISc., said: “There is a limited section of research and intellectual property generation in management schools. Through this exchange, they will have access to a wide variety of research and they will learn to interact with fundamental scientists.”

As for IISc. students, they will learn about facilitating commercialisation of intellectual property, he added.
