If potholes are spotted, BBMP engineers will face suspension

The Commissioner sent out the warning after he found several potholes while inspecting a few wards on Monday.

Any pothole spotted from Tuesday will result in suspension — this is the warning given to BBMP engineers by Commissioner N. Manjunath Prasad after yet another deadline set by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to make the city’s roads pothole-free ended on Monday.

The Commissioner sent out the warning after he found several potholes while inspecting a few wards on Monday. This is contrary to reports from ward and zonal engineers, who had claimed that the city’s roads were free of potholes.

According to BBMP’s estimates, during its last count on Saturday, there were 700 potholes across the city — 300 of them newly identified. However, a report given by the Chief Engineers on Monday said there were none.

“I went around Hebbal, Malleswaram, Byatarayanapura and Yelahanka and found multiple potholes even on major roads such as Ballari Road, West of Chord Road, Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan Road and Yelahanka Main Road. I have instructed officials to immediately complete the work as I have received complaints through the media and public from other divisions too,” he said.

In his message to BBMP engineers on Monday, he said: “... it is observed that still lot of potholes are observed and the media is busy taking photo and videos of potholes. Before Hon’ble CM takes any action, from tomorrow onwards based on my inspection I will be suspending some engineers who are blatantly blind to the presence of potholes and have not done their duty. One last chance today to do your duty.”
