The High Court of Karnataka on Wednesday asked the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to provide particulars of gradients and vertical clearances provided for the existing flyovers in the city.
A Division Bench comprising acting Chief Justice H.G. Ramesh and Justice P.S. Dinesh Kumar issued the direction while hearing a public interest litigation petition challenging the feasibility of constructing a steel flyover at Shivananda junction while pointing out various shortcomings, including non-compliance to Indian Road Congress (IRC) standards.
The Bench sought particulars after the BBMP’s counsel defended the level of gradient and the 4.5-m vertical clearance provided for the proposed steel flyover while claiming that they were sufficient and safe for motorists. The IRC standard prescribe 5.5 m as vertical clearance. The gradients provided for steel flyover is less steep than what has been prescribed by the IRC.

The BBMP has claimed before the court that the IRC standards are not mandatory for construction of flyovers and the standards specified could be altered depending on local requirements.
Further hearing was adjourned till December 11.
