HC notice to State on storm-water drains

Published - August 28, 2014 01:08 am IST - Bangalore:

The High Court of Karnataka on Monday ordered issue of notice to the State government on a public interest litigation petition complaining of roads, drains and houses being flooded because of the failure of civic agencies to maintain storm-water drains.

A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice D.H. Waghela and Justice Ashok B. Hinchigeri passed the order on the petition filed by the Citizens Action Group, Bangalore. The petition sought directions to the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board and the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike to desilt all storm-water drains, remove encroachments and hold a survey of drains, among others.

Pointing out that the existing drainage system was unable to handle excess water when there was heavy rain, the petition stated that encroachment of drains, dumping garbage into drains and failure to maintain them are causing hardship to people.
