Harassed by girlfriend’s parents, police, youth commits suicide

Harassed by girlfriend’s family and police officials, a 25-year-old youth committed suicide in Bengaluru on Wednesday.

The victim has been identified as Deepak, a private firm employee. It is said that his girlfriend confided in him, handed over her mobile phone and SIM card before leaving for Mumbai. But two days after receiving no information about her whereabouts, Deepak called her sister to handover the mobile phone and SIM card.

His girlfriend’s family suspected Deepak’s involvement in her disappearance, and lodged a complaint against him with the Hebbagodi police. Based on the complaint, the police summoned Deepak for questioning and allegedly harassed him to know the whereabouts.

Depressed with the turn of events, Deepak alleged committed suicide by jumping in front of a train in Chandapura. He has left behind a suicide note, in which he has mentioned harassment by both police and his girlfriend's family.

The Hebbagodi police have taken up a case and are investigating, while senior police officials are also conducting a probe to ascertain lapses on part of the police.
