Get ready to pay Rs 15 per hour to park on Brigade Rd.

January 25, 2015 01:49 pm | Updated 01:49 pm IST - Bengaluru:

This is just for a two-wheeler, according to a BBMP proposal

Taking your vehicle to the Central Business District or major arterial roads in the city is set to significantly lighten your wallet, with the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) intending to reintroduce pay-and-park facilities with higher fees in mind.

The civic body will introduce a differential pricing system for at least 56 major roads after categorising them under ‘premium, normal or street’. What this means is that it will cost Rs 15 per hour to park a two-wheeler on busy roads such as Brigade Road, M.G. Road, Commercial Street and Lalbagh Road. For four-wheelers, the cost is Rs 30 per hour. The rationale is to ensure an increase in the “indirect costs” of travelling in personal vehicles and forcing commuters to opt for public transport – buses, autorickshaws or taxis.

The BBMP will call for tenders from contractors for these pay-and-park sites on February 6. However, Karnataka Pay and Park Contractors Association (KPPCA) has opposed the move.
