Five labourers escaped with injuries when a mound of earth caved in on them at a construction site at Dwarakanagar in Bagalur on Sunday.

The police said the labourers — Ratnamma (40), Ramadevi (30), Gangoolleppa (45), Venkataramanaiah (55) and Subbappaiah (55) — were rescued by their co-workers and rushed to Yelahanka government hospital. They were later shifted to Victoria hospital.

While two of them sustained fractures, two others escaped with minor injuries. Venkataramanaiah’s abdomen injuries initially caused concern, but medical authorities said it was nothing life threatening.

Loosened by rain?

The Bagalur police said that 23 labourers, originally from Anantapur in Andhra Pradesh, were working in the foundation pit of a proposed two-storey structure owned by Girish alias Giri Gowda. A mound of earth, perhaps loosened by the rain, suddenly caved in on five of them.

By the time the police reached the spot, three labourers had been pulled out thanks to quick thinking by their colleagues.

The Bagalur police have registered a case of negligence and causing grievous hurt by an act endangering the life or personal safety of others, against the owner.
