Five die in accident on Bengaluru-Mangaluru highway

The bus stand is at least 20 feet away from the highway.

An outing by college students turned tragic on Thursday for a family of four. The driver of their vehicle lost control of the vehicle and rammed into a bus stand near Kudur on the Bengaluru-Mangaluru highway, claiming the lives of five persons.

According to the police, six students from HKBK College in J.P. Nagar in Bengaluru had hired an SUV. They were heading towards Savandurga Hill near Magadi when the driver lost control. The vehicle rammed into a bus stand and fell into a ditch. Three members of a family, who were in the bus stand, and two persons in the car died on the spot.

The deceased are Kemparaju, 40, a cook and resident of Yediyur; his children Lavanya K., 11, and Sanjay K., 2. His wife Mamatha K. suffered serious injuries. The family was taking a break after riding in their motorcycle from Bengaluru towards their hometown Muttugadahalli in Tumakuru district to celebrate Deepavali.

The SUV was mangled beyond recognition. The passengers in the SUV who lost their lives are Sajjan Kumar and Navaneet Upadhayay.

The injured were shifted to Nelamangala Government Hospital.

According to the police, the driver of the SUV could not properly negotiate a steep curve near Lakkenahalli and veered into the bus shelter, which was 20 feet away from the edge of the road.
