Fake KAS officer took people for a ride promising them sites

C.N. Shekar was arrested on charges of cheating and impersonation.

The Central Crime Branch staff on Monday arrested a man who had allegedly posed as a KAS officer working in the Bangalore Development Authority and cheated the public by promising them sites in BDA'a Arkavathy Layout.

The arrested man is C.N. Shekar (28), a resident of Jayanagar 5th Block and a native of Kolar district. Sources in the police told The Hindu on Tuesday that investigation so far had indicated that he had cheated some 20 people of nearly Rs. 40 lakh. He was arrested on a complaint filed by Nataraj, a Bangalore resident, whom he had cheated of a few lakh rupees.

The police expect the numbers to go up as the investigation progresses.

Several fake and forged documents such as title deeds, possession certificates and allotment letters pertaining to the Arkavathy Layout have been seized from Shekar. The police also confiscated a sports utility vehicle and Rs. 5 lakh cash from him.

Shekar had even created a fake document stating that the then Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa had got him transferred from Shimoga to Bangalore as Chief Executive Officer of Bangalore Urban Zilla Panchayat. Even in his wedding invitation, it was mentioned that Shekar was a KAS officer working in the Department of Revenue, the police said.

The arrest was made by a team comprising Assistant Commissioner of Police K.N. Jitendranath, Inspectors B.N. Srinivas and N.H. Ramachandraiah and their staff. A case has been registered against him in the Siddapura police station.
