Doctors attending on the unidentified woman, who was found by the Tavarekere police on February 4 in an unconscious state with bite marks and a severe head injury near Byadarahalli on Magadi Road, have asked the police to step up security for her as she had regained consciousness.
A senior doctor, who has been treating her from day one, told The Hindu she was on the mend. “She has regained consciousness and is also uttering a few words such as “saku” and “beku”. Today she mentioned her name and the place from where she comes but we don’t know how far that is reliable. We have informed the investigating officer about this and have also asked for extra security for her,” the doctor said. Although her injuries have almost healed, the right side of her body is still weak. “It is because of this she cannot stand on her own. We are making her sit on a wheelchair and are moving her around. We plan to shift her to NIMHANS for rehabilitation as we don’t have any rehabilitation facilities in Victoria Hospital,” he said. “Now that she has regained consciousness, we are worried that someone might attack her again.”
Although the police had suspected that the woman could have been a victim of gang-rape, doctors had ruled it out. Medical examination and forensic reports showed no evidence of rape.

The incident had taken a political turn after the former Minister Shobha Karandlaje alleged that Bharatiya Janata Party workers from her former constituency Yeshwantpur were involved in the case. She had accused the BJP government, especially Home Minister R. Ashok, of shielding the accused.
