Do not allow debris to pile up: George warns BBMP

Joint commissioners of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike were pulled up by City Development Minister K.J. George on Thursday for allowing construction debris to pile up on the city’s roads.

The Minister was participating in a meeting on solid waste management when he warned the officials.

In a statement to the press, Mr. George said that he had asked the officials to keep vigil during the night and stop vehicles that were dumping construction waste haphazardly across the city.

Such vehicles must be seized and if the joint commissioners fail to stop this menace, action will be initiated against them.

Reckless dumping of construction debris in ecologically sensitive areas such as lakes has damaged many of the city’s larger lakes.

The BBMP had recently announced that it would install a CCTV network across the city’s lakes to help catch offenders who would then be fined ₹5 lakh per instance of dumping.

Waste-to-energy plant

The meeting included BBMP Commissioner Manjunath Prasad and Joint Commissioner Sarfaraz Khan who informed the Minister that the city’s first waste to energy plant at Mavallipura will be commissioned by July.

The plant can handle a capacity of 500 tonnes. In addition, the BBMP is also on the lookout for small capacity plants which can process waste between 50 to 100 tonnes, the officials said.
