The crash in the price of tomato in Kolar and Chickballapur districts, the tomato-growing areas in the State, is yet to percolate to consumers in the city.
While the price of a kilo of tomato is between Rs. 14 and Rs. 16, it is expected to come down to half in the city in a day or two.
While farmers in the markets in these areas are getting between Rs. 3 and Rs. 6 a kg depending on quality, the Horticultural Producers Co-operative Marketing and Processing Society (HOPCOMS) price for a kilo of tomato in the city on Wednesday was Rs. 14. The price of a kilo of tomato in the open market is around Rs. 16.

A HOPCOMS official said the price fall was yet to percolate to the Bengaluru market and he expected it to occur soon. “The supply of tomato has drastically increased in the last three days. We have a supply of at least four times the demand in the market. The prices are going to crash to around Rs. 7 a kilo in a day or two,” he said.
