Cop suspended for ‘helping’ businessman

May 27, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:32 am IST - Bengaluru:

Following an incident reminiscent of the allegations behind actor Salman Khan’s hit-and-run case, a traffic police inspector has been suspended for attempting to frame a driver, instead of a businessman, for a recent road accident.

Based on a tip-off, police suspended Jagadish T.S., Chikkajala Inspector, who was allegedly aiding businessman, Bhavesh, son of a Chickpet-based textile merchant, escape after the accident involving his vehicle in which one person died and another was injured. According to police, Bhavesh on May 20 was driving the car that hit a two-wheeler at Meenukunte on Hoskur Road killing the pillion rider, Ramachandra, on the spot, while leaving the rider, Ajay, seriously injured.

An investigating officer said that Jagadish went to the accident spot but did not arrest Bhavesh. Instead, he arrested the driver, Teja, the next day under section 304 (a) (culpable homicide).

Based on a tip-off, Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) S. Girish conducted a detailed inquiry during which Teja confessed that he was not present at the time of the accident, and that he was forced to say that he had committed the crime in exchange for some money. Mr. Girish then released Teja with a warning, and Bhavesh was arrested on Tuesday.

Instead of framing charges against a businessman in an accident case, the driver was arrested and booked for culpable homicide
