Officials find meat and biomedical waste near Nelamangala

Mixed waste, including meat waste and biomedical waste, was dumped by the side of a road near Nelamangala in several black bags.

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) was alerted. Civic officials found bills from Victoria Hospital in the pile of waste. BBMP Commissioner B.H. Anil Kumar tweeted that the civic body would blacklist the contractor and levy a fine of ₹1 lakh for unauthorised collection and disposal of mixed and hazardous waste.

According to senior civic officials, the waste could be from a bulk generator. The vehicle used to dump the waste is said to be an open lorry. An official said, “We assume that the vehicle was denied entry into the landfill. In a desperate act, the driver may have dumped the waste by the side of the road.”

BBMP officials went to the Regional Transport Office to trace the owner, who has now been identified as Venugopal. They had a tough time cleaning up the spot and ensuring that hazardous and medical waste were disposed off as per the norms.

BBMP’s Special Commissioner (Solid Waste Management) D. Randeep said after the incident, local communities stopped other trucks heading to the waste processing unit.

“We are trying to ascertain if the owner of the vehicle is an empanelled vendor. If he is, he will be immediately blacklisted. A case under Section 278 of the Indian Penal Code will be filed against him. Since it is a non-cognisable offence, we will have to seek court permission before filing the case. It will be done soon,” he said.
