Complaints against town planning officials

January 29, 2014 12:31 am | Updated May 13, 2016 12:56 pm IST - Bangalore:

‘There are 42 officials for the 11 sanctioned posts in the Town Planning Department’

The large number of officials on deputation in Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike’s (BBMP) Town Planning Department came under fire at the civic body’s meeting here on Tuesday.

Raising the issue, Hanumanthnagar councillor K. Chandrashekar claimed councillors were facing the worst of officials’ irregularities.

“Why do we need such officials in the BBMP? Many come to the BBMP with recommendations and want to be posted in only certain departments. Why is the Commissioner quiet on this issue?” he asked.

He pointed out that though there were only 11 sanctioned posts in the BBMP’s Town Planning Department, there were 42 officials in the department.

Nagapura councillor S. Harish agreed and said the department should only have officials with a town planning degree. Instead, there were mechanical engineers and officials from Bescom who had been posted on deputation in the department.

Chamarajpet councillor B.V. Ganesh said the Commissioner had the power to send back officials and disregard the “recommendations”.

The councillors demanded that the town planning officials be posted wherever there was shortage of ward engineers. They also pointed out that though the officials had been given additional responsibility to monitor solid waste management, they had not done so.

Commissioner M. Lakshminarayan said that if the town planning officials failed to monitor solid waste management, they would be suspended immediately. He added that the officials should be on the field till 1 p.m.
