Kannada Development Authority (KDA) chairman L. Hanumanthaiah on Saturday urged the State government to come out with a new education policy that will enable the implementation of Kannada as a compulsory first language from classes I to X in all schools.

Speaking at a programme organised by the KDA to felicitate 48 judges who delivered judgments in Kannada, Mr. Hanumanthaiah suggested that the policy could be on the lines of Tamil Nadu model.

He also wanted Chief Minister Siddramaiah to mount pressure on the Centre to come out with a national language policy.

From next year, the KDA will honour advocates who use Kannada while arguing cases. For this, the existing

vacancies of Kannada shorthand writers in lower courts should be filled up, he said.

He said the authority would review the implementation of Kannada as the administrative language in the State. "This task will begin from the Chief Secretary’s office and we have already written about this to the Chief Secretary," he said.

The Chief Minister did not speak at the event as a day’s mourning was observed on Saturday, following the death of Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah.
