Police seek details of company that constructed escalator

A day after an 18-month-old girl succumbed to injuries after falling through a gap in the escalator at Srirampura station, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has started plugging holes near escalators.

On Sunday night, Hasini and her grandfather were attempting to go up the escalator at the station when they lost balance. Hasini fell in the gap and on to the road where she suffered severe head injuries. She died on Monday morning.

Metro authorities have begun placing nets to cover the gaps between escalators in Srirampura and other stations. An official said this was on a temporary basis and a more permanent measure would be undertaken to prevent such incidents.

The Subramanyanagar police, who have registered a case of negligence against BMRCL, are yet to question metro officials. On Monday, they had conducted a spot inspection.

The police have written to BMRCL authorities to submit details of the contractor who had constructed the escalator and the adjoining stairs. They have also sought the details of the construction plan to ascertain if it was built in accordance with safety standards.

“We will take a legal opinion based on the replies we get from BMRCL authorities,” said a senior police officer.

Hasini’s grandfather Balakrishna, 52, had filed a complaint with the Subramanyanagar police accusing BMRCL of negligence.
