A 100-year-old man successfully underwent pacemaker surgery at St John’s Medical College Hospital on Thursday and was discharged on Saturday.
Centenarian Srinivasan, who resides in Koramangala, was admitted in a critical state with a heart block and a very slow heart beat, according to hospital sources.
He underwent temporary pacing on an emergency basis and continued to be completely dependent on the temporary external pacemaker. “Despite his advanced age, the pacemaker surgery was considered essential and life saving,” said a spokesperson for St. John’s.

The surgery was conducted by Dr. Kiron Varghese, professor and head of the Cardiology Department, and his team.
Only two other centenarians have undergone pacemaker surgery in the country, both in north India.
